At HopKidz, we’re parents too. We believe babies benefit from independent social interaction experiences with other kids and adults, outside of our everyday home routines. It helps build our children’s confidence and helps develop their communication and social skills.
We’re mothers too and we know first hand the importance of “mommy time”. That first year with baby is especially hard, so it’s even more important to take a break to recharge and reconnect with yourself. Occasional, or on-demand childcare gives you “me time” to get a hair cut, have a massage, grab coffee with a friend, or take a nap to recharge your batteries.
Kids go on family vacations, get sick, and are pulled out of daycare on short notice. Sometimes it is just hard to fill a spot. Make up for missed revenue by opening spots for drop-in. You’ll also be helping local parents in a desperate need for a short notice booking!
Did you know that in BC you don’t need special licensing to care for 1-2 additional children in your own home? If you’re home already with your own children, earn a little extra income by caring for other children too!
No. We do not provide on-call nannies for your home. Instead, we work with childcare providers who can provide occasional child care from their child care facility or home. We work with licensed daycare centres, registered home-based daycares, and also with individuals under the provincial Licence Not Required guidelines.
Provincial guidelines use the term “childminding” when parents must remain on-site and be available should the child need it. HopKidz referrals are better described as occasional babysitting and you can leave the premise.
Visit HopKidz.com and enter your email into the box at the top of the page. We’ll email you a link to today’s availability list. Re-submit your email each day you require child care and we’ll send you the most up-to-date list.
The list is updated at least twice daily. HopKidz contacts child care providers first thing in the morning and follow-up before lunch to updated availability. We encourage child care providers to let us know as soon as they filled-in their available spots so we can update the list in near real-time.
Yes. We post child care availability for any time and day of the week, as long as our child care providers share this information with us. We do encourage our providers to open up spots after-hours.
When our child care providers share availability beyond “same-day” we will add it to the list. We still check-in with them daily to help ensure our list is as accurate as possible.
HopKidz is an information referral service and we do not provide recommendations, only availability and contact information. We do visit each provider in person and we only add providers who are registered and/or pass our screening process. Parents have the responsibility to ensure that the child care arrangement chosen is suitable for them.
No. You need to contact the selected childcare provider directly to confirm the availability and book your child in. We strive to be as up-to-date as possible, however all the spots are allocated by childcare providers on first come first serve basis. Once we get notified that a spot is no longer available, we’ll remove it from the list.
The spreadsheet contains contact information for each provider. Simply choose a provider with listed availability and contact them directly to confirm and book your spot. Please contact them by phone, text or email only — no drop-ins please. Please only make your way to the provider’s location if you receive a confirmation that the spot is being held for you. Just like your favourite restaurant, spots are only held for 15 mins after your reserved time. After that, the provider has the option to re-open the spot to another child.
Call the child care provider right away if you expect to arrive late. Generally, spots will only stay open for a max 15 min after your reserved time. After the 15 min lapsed, the childcare provider is free to re-open the spot and offer it to someone else. Note: even if you arrive late, you are still responsible to pay for the entire window reserved.
Call the caretaker right away as soon as you know you need to cancel. We track users who consistently cancel or are a no-show for their reservation. Should this behaviour persist, we reserve the right to ban you from receiving future availability.
Call the child care provider ASAP if you want to extend your reservation. Extensions are not guaranteed and are offered at the discretion (and availability) of the child care provider. There may be a concurring reservation for another child already in place, in which case you HAVE TO pick up your child or arrange for someone else to pick up your child at the originally agreed upon time.
Call the child care provider right away if you suspect you’re running late for pick-up. Given availability, you may be able to extend your booking. You may be asked to arrange for someone else to pick up your child at the originally assigned pick-up time. Note: Most licensed daycares have late pick-up financial penalties applied, and may even call child services if the parent is over an hour late, and the parent or emergency contacts can not be reached.
If situations beyond your control prevent you from picking up your child yourself, call the child care provider ASAP ad provide the name of a person you designate to pick up your child on your behalf. Follow the childcare provider’s policy and guidelines communicated to you on their standard process in dealing with these situations.
HopKidz provides a referral service for 0-5 year olds, with majority of availability for the 0-18mo age group. Confirm your child’s age when you book as some licenced facilities have regulations around the age groups they can accept.
Every childcare provider is different, so please check our daily list or contact the provider directly. Note that under current BC provincial child care licensing regulation a licensed caretaker should not provide care for more than 13 hours each day for each child. For License Not Required babysitters there is no specific prescription, however we encourage them to follow the licensing guidelines as close as possible. Please refer to provincial child care licensing regulation for more information.
You should confirm the child care provider’s rates and the total cost for the stay when making reservation. Carry enough cash with you to cover the whole stay for your child. Some daycares may accept electronic Interac email transfer for payment, however you should confirm their preferred method of payment and any alternative methods of payment they would accept when making a reservation. You pay to childcare provider directly upon your child’s drop off. Without making a full payment on drop-off, childcare provider will not accept your child into their care. You are financially responsible for any additional payments for extending the care window, being late for drop-in, as well as any applicable late pickup fees. Note: Most licensed daycares do have late pick-up financial penalties applied. Read “I’m running late to pick-up my child! What do I do?” for more details.
Generally, there is no deposit required for drop-in bookings. Some licensed daycare centres may still charge a registration fee for your child to apply towards creating a file and cover basic care supplies they are providing. HopKidz is actively working on convincing childcare providers to remove the registration fee for occasional on demand drop-in bookings. You should confirm if there is a Registration fee with the childcare provider directly when making a reservation.
It is FREE! It is completely free to receive your daily availability information list from us! Just submit your email each day you require care to get today’s list.
Each childcare provider applies and is vetted by our staff (who are mothers too!). Our screening process is quite rigorous: we require an application form, reference checks, background checks, licensing and registration certificates check, in-person visit to each site, and more.
Please bring everything your child typically needs: diapers, food, bottles, extra clothing, etc. There is a checklist in the shared folder you can follow. It is important to confirm if there is anything you are NOT allowed to bring with you: such as peanuts or other allergens. Upon arrival you’ll be asked for your child’s information. Download and complete a generic registration form from our shared folder, fill it in and bring with you each time you drop off your child at a new caregiver to save time.

It is completely up to you if you require a registration fee. We strongly encourage you to do not charge registration fee for drop-in, occasional, short-term, per hour child care bookings. The easier you make it for parents – the more bookings and extra income you can expect. HopKidz will work with you to simplify the registration process through our service. We provide parents with a generic Child Registration Form** that parents can fill out ahead of time. You simply review this sheet when they arrive and add any policies specific to your child care centre. **HopKidz generic Child Registration Form is based on the standard registration form supplied by Fraser Health and includes all the mandatory information that has to be provided by parents to child care providers as per provincial child care regulations. Please contact us for more information.

Parents are financially responsible for any additional payments for extending the care window, being late for drop-in, as well as any applicable late pickup fees. Please follow your standard policy regarding late pick-up. Parents will generally pay you in cash. We do encourage you to make alternative instant methods of payment available, such as Interac email transfer or payment by credit card through a mobile app.
Once you have your spot filled, please contact HopKidz as soon as possible and we’ll update the list.
It is ultimately up to you how to handle the situation. We ask that you keep the spot available for at least 15 min after the confirmed drop in time. You do not have to keep the spot available if the parent is late for more than 15 min, and you can reopen the availability and offer the spot to someone else. We encourage parents to contact you as soon as they realize they are running late. Our guidelines provide that the parents are financially responsible for the full reserved window even if they arrive late.

You do not have to keep the spot available if the parent is late for more than 15 min or is a no-show, and you can reopen the availability and offer the spot to someone else. If you have a policy in place on how to deal with this situation, please follow your policy. We do encourage parents to call you when they suspect they’ll be running late. If the parent doesn’t call, as a general rule of thumb, try to reach the parent. If the parent can’t be reached, try all other additional, work, cell, or emergency contact numbers you have been provided. If no one can be reached, and a parent is late for pick-up for more than 2 hours, you have the right to consider the child “abandoned” and call Ministry of Social Services for them to pick-up the child. Note: parents are financially responsible to pay you for the time their child was in your care while you were late, and any applicable late pickup fees you may have in place.
